Instructions

How to use the Discount Calculator

  1. Enter the original listed price and the advertised percentage discount.
  2. Add a sales-tax rate if tax applies to the discounted price in your location.
  3. Review the savings, reduced price, tax, and final price rather than relying on the sale label alone.
Formula

How the calculation works

Discounted price = original price × (1 − discount ÷ 100)

Savings equal original price times the discount rate. If tax is entered, it is applied to the reduced price and then added to produce the final amount.

Worked example

Example calculation

A $120 item discounted by 25% saves $30 and costs $90 before tax. With 8% sales tax on the reduced price, tax is $7.20 and the final price is $97.20.

How to interpret the result

The savings figure compares the original price with the pre-tax discounted price. The final price may be closer to the original once taxes or fees are included.

Important context

Notes and assumptions

  • The percentage discount is applied once to the original price.
  • Tax is calculated after the discount, which is common but not universal.
  • Shipping, fixed fees, coupons, and stacked discounts are excluded.
Common questions

Discount Calculator questions

How do I find 30% off a price?

Multiply the price by 0.70. A 30% reduction means you pay 70% of the original price.

Can a discount be more than 100%?

No for a normal sale price, so this calculator limits the discount to 100%.

Is tax always calculated after a discount?

Rules vary by jurisdiction and promotion type. Check the receipt or local tax rule when accuracy is important.
