Use the Salary Calculator
Convert gross pay between hourly, weekly, monthly, and annual amounts using your own work schedule.
The basic salary-to-hourly formula
Hourly rate = annual gross salary ÷ paid weeks per year ÷ hours worked per week. A common full-time assumption is 52 paid weeks and 40 hours each week, or 2,080 paid hours per year.
Using that assumption, a $52,000 salary equals $25 per hour because 52,000 ÷ 52 ÷ 40 = 25. The result changes when the schedule or number of paid weeks changes.
Choose the right number of weeks
Use 52 weeks when salary continues through paid vacation and holidays. For an hourly contract with unpaid leave, use the number of weeks you realistically expect to bill or be paid.
A year has slightly more than 52 exact seven-day periods, but 52 is the standard payroll planning convention. The goal is to model paid work, not the astronomical length of a calendar year.
Compare more than base pay
An hourly equivalent helps compare offers, but it does not value health coverage, retirement contributions, paid leave, bonuses, equipment, training, commute costs, or employment security. Include those separately when they materially differ.
Also consider expected hours. A salaried role at $52,000 averages $25 per hour at 40 hours weekly, but about $20.80 at 48 hours weekly if no additional pay is received.
Convert hourly pay to annual salary
Reverse the formula: annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × paid weeks per year. A $30 hourly rate at 35 hours for 48 paid weeks produces $50,400 in gross pay.
Irregular schedules require a more detailed estimate. Calculate expected hours for each period, or use an average based on reliable past data rather than assuming every week is identical.
Gross pay is not take-home pay
These conversions use gross pay before tax and payroll deductions. Take-home pay depends on country, region, filing status, benefits, and other personal factors.
For a clear comparison, keep all offers on the same gross or net basis. Mixing a gross salary with a net hourly figure will produce a misleading result.
Questions about how to calculate an hourly rate from salary
How many working hours are in a year?
A common assumption is 2,080 hours: 40 hours × 52 weeks. Use your actual paid schedule when it differs.
How do I include unpaid vacation?
Reduce paid weeks per year by the unpaid weeks you expect to take.
Is monthly salary annual salary divided by 12?
Yes for an average monthly equivalent, although actual payroll periods and paycheck dates may differ.
