Instructions

How to use the Hours Calculator

  1. Enter the normal start and end time.
  2. Subtract unpaid breaks and choose working days per week.
  3. Use decimal hours for payroll calculations and hours-and-minutes for schedules.
Formula

How the calculation works

Daily hours = (end − start − break) ÷ 60

Clock times are converted to minutes. Overnight shifts add 24 hours when the end precedes the start. Weekly hours multiply daily decimal hours by working days, and monthly hours use 52 ÷ 12 weeks.

Worked example

Example calculation

A 9:00 to 17:30 shift is 8 hours 30 minutes. After a 30-minute break, the day is 8.00 hours; over five days that is 40 hours per week.

How to interpret the result

The weekly total assumes the same schedule each selected day. Irregular shifts should be calculated separately and added.

Important context

Notes and assumptions

  • An end time earlier than the start is on the following day.
  • The break cannot exceed the elapsed shift.
  • Overtime rules and paid breaks are not applied automatically.
Common questions

Hours Calculator questions

Can it calculate an overnight shift?

Yes. An earlier end time is treated as the next day.

Why are monthly hours an average?

Months contain different numbers of working days, so the result uses 52 weeks divided by 12.

Are breaks included?

The entered break is subtracted from each workday.
